Dr. Ahmed Ihab MD, PhD

Professor of Human Genetics

Dr Ahmed Ihab Abdelaziz Fahmy currently works as a Professor of Human Genetics & Molecular Medicine. Dr Fahmy is also a visiting Professor, at the Institute of Pathology, Ruprecht-KarlsUniversität Heidelberg in Germany. His clinical practice is in clinical genetics & genetic counseling as he works as the head of the Molecular Diagnostic Unit at the Genetic Diagnostic Center (GDC), as well as a consultant for Medical Genetics & Genetic Counseling at Prime Clinics, Cairo. Dr. Fahmy has obtained his Medical Degree (MB BCh) from Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt, and his medical training and PhD in Molecular Medicine from the Charite’ University Medicine, Berlin, Germany. He worked at the Max-Delbrueck-Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin and as a Fellow of the DFG Graduiertenkolleg, Charite’ University Medicine. He was appointed as a postdoctoral fellow at the Julia McFarlane Diabetes Research Centre, Medical School, University of Calgary, Canada. He joined the German University in Cairo (GUC) as an Assistant then Associate Professor of Molecular Medicine and worked as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the American University in Cairo (AUC). His Clinical Practice is in Human Medical Genetics, Genetic Counseling, Diagnosis, and therapy. Moreover, he is a member of the Panel of Experts for Rare Diseases, which is part of the Rare Diseases International (RDI), in collaboration with the WHO Collective Global Network for Rare Diseases (WHO CGN4RD) and he works as a consultant for several pharmaceutical and biotechnology Firms. His research focuses on the role of non-coding transcriptome in cancer and liver pathology. His lab is funded by grants from local & international funding institutions; the Science and Technology Development Fund (STDF), the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT), the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), Germany, and Pfizer, USA. He has published more than 70 publications in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Fahmy has an approved patent in cancer diagnostics and therapy by the European Patent Office. European Patent number: EP 4 379 064 A1, (2024). Dr Fahmy is a current member of the Egyptian-Reference-Genome Committee. In 2015 he was awarded the State Encouragement Award for Advanced Technological Medical Sciences by the (ASRT) in Egypt. And in 2017 he was awarded the Georg-Forster Alexander Von Humboldt fellowship for experienced researchers from the Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation, Germany.
